Google has quietly disabled a feature that notified users of its search service in China when a keyword had been censored by the Chinese government’s internet controls, according to censorship monitoring blog GreatFire.org. The blog reports that the change was made sometime between December 5 and December 8, 2012, with no official statement from Google to announce or explain its removal.

According to GreatFire.org Google has also deleted a help article which explained how to use the feature — which it says indicates that Google is self-censoring in this instance, rather than being blocked by the government (which has happened in the past). “Since the removal of the help article could only be done willingly by Google, the only explanation we see is that Google struck a deal with the Chinese government, giving in to considerable pressure to self-censor,” it writes.

I stand for justice for Trayvon, not because he was a “good kid”, as has been brought up many times in the media. In my opinion, that’s neither here nor there. Even if Trayvon had just been released from jail, he still has a right to live! There is NO evidence that he posed a threat to anyone, so why is no one being held accountable for his murder?

I think this is a very relevant issue for educators, because we must be aware of the type of society we are preparing our students for. How can I encourage the young black men who walk into my classroom to do their best and look to the future if they know full well that they can be shot down in cold blood by someone and nothing will be done about it?

All of the changes that we make to our education system in an effort to close the achievement gap mean absolutely nothing if our students are not safe in their own country. How can we trust a government that would allow this to happen to a black boy to fix an education system that has failed so many of them? No matter how this situation ends, it is a sad reminder that we have a lot more work to do to make our country a place where EVERYONE has a right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.

I know that I will be talking to my kids about why it is so important to vote, be politically involved and to watch how their lawmakers react to situations like this. I also want them to know that soon it will be THEIR responsibility to create the society they want to live in–it’s not a spectator sport.

What will you say to your students about this?

From the site:

What is the flipped classroom?

A reversed teaching model that delivers instruction at home through interactive, teacher-created videos and moves “homework” to the classroom. Moving lectures outside of the classroom allows teachers to spend more 1:1 time with each student. Students have the opportunity to ask questions and work through problems with the guidance of their teachers and the support of their peers - creating a collaborative learning environment.

What are some benefits of this method?

Gives teachers more time to spend 1:1 helping students

Builds stronger student/teacher relationships

Offers a way for teachers to share information with other faculty, substitute teachers, students, parents, and
the community easily

Produces the ability for students to “rewind” lessons and master topics

Creates a collaborative learning environment in the classroom

In my district, the causes of absenteeism are more complicated than anything Education Week has pointed out. Within the context of the Maryvale community (a low-SES enclave of Phoenix), absenteeism is rooted in larger, systemic injustice that goes beyond simply “more officers” or “reach out to parents.”

If it were my survey in my community, I would add the following options:

Quit treating student absences as a criminal act and assuming that the state knows better than the parents how to raise a child. Quit criminalizing the victims of social injustice and help parents instead.

Provide better jobs for parents (many of our students move frequently because they live transient lives)

Provide a pathway to legal citizenship for immigrant families (families are fleeing to and from states out of fear of deportation, despite working hard and providing for their families)

Daycare for parents with young children or a living wage so that families can live off of one income (many of our students miss school to watch younger siblings)

Universal healthcare (many of our students miss school because they are not getting the preventative care that they need.)

What Education Week fails to grasp is that when you limit your options to fixing behaviors, you offer choice without freedom. (Unrelated note: for the next few days, you can download any of my books for a dollar on Amazon.com)

Absenteeism is rooted in larger, systemic injustice that goes beyond simply “more officers” or “reach out to parents.”

The research results, previewed exclusively for TUAW, are uniformly positive. In one study, students who annotated text on their iPads scored 25% higher on questions regarding information transfer than their paper-based peers. In a separate project covering iPad usage patterns, two researchers studying ACU’s first all-digital class discovered that the iPad promotes “learning moments” and helps students make more efficient use of their time. Grad students working in an online program reported a 95% satisfaction rate for online iPad-based coursework. As far as the ACU studies are concerned, the iPad in education is a success story.
